Women’s Studies Minor Revised, with two new courses


1985

Women’s Studies Minor Revised and expanded to 22 credits


1986

Inauguration of the Feminist Research Series, in which faculty give presentations on their research into a broad range of feminist topics.


1986-1996

Establishment of an on-campus Child Care Center. Working with ASEWU, EWU Women’s Commission, YMCA, and the City of Cheney, this ongoing project is finally completed in 1996.


1988

President’s Women’s Commission started by the Women’s Studies Center by Karen Michaelson and Lee Swedberg

Women’s Center redecorated and remodeled


1991

CARE (Creating a Rape-Free Environment) founded by Student Health and Carol Vines


1998

Lee Swedberg retires. Sally Winkle is appointed Interim Director, then becomes Director of Women’s Studies Program in 2000.


1999

Renovation of Monroe Hall begins; Women’s Studies Programs moves to Showalter 120 for one-and-a-half years during the renovation.


2000

Women’s Studies hires the first tenure-track joint position, in Women’s Studies and Philosophy. Mimi Marinucci, Ph.D. in Philosophy from Temple University, comes to EWU in fall 2000.


2001

Renovation of Monroe Hall and Women’s Studies Center completed.


2002

Women’s Studies Center at EWU celebrates its 25th anniversary.


2005

Gender Studies Certificate is added to the course offerings.

The Women’s Studies Program changes its name to Women’s and Gender Studies to reflect growth and changes in the field.


2006

EWU’s first faculty member is tenured in Women’s Studies, as Mimi Marinucci is appointed Associate Professor, with tenure in Philosophy and Women’s Studies

A new major in Women’s and Gender Studies is offered for the first time.

Women’s Studies gains two more faculty members, with the hiring of Rachel Schneider, joint appointment in Women’s Studies and Criminal Justice, and the re-appointment of Elizabeth Kissling, professor of Communication Studies, to half-time in Women’s and Gender Studies.


2007

EWU presents its first class of students with Bachelor’s degrees in Women’s and Gender Studies.
