Call to action! Bike accident leaves activist in coma

From my perspective, as an activist, people who don’t wait for directions from “the organizer” or permission from the city, people who don’t limit themselves to petitions and electoral campaigns, are a breath of fresh air.

Spokane is on the verge of losing one of these effective and ambitious activists.

Bethany Mooter has been instrumental in keeping Spokane’s local music scene alive, as an artist and an organizer. She also put in motion the restarting and revamping of our local Food Not Bombs.

Unfortunately, Bethany was in a bike accident last week and suffered a pretty severe injury. Her friends say she’s recovering, but still in a coma.

There will be a three-day benefit barbeque/concert/yard sale from June 3-5 at the Checkerboard Tavern, 1716 E. Sprague Avenue. You can RSVP on Facebook. They also need volunteers for the event. You can get updates on her condition from the Bethany’s Grace blog.

Think good thoughts for her or donate your time, but don’t let that be the extent of your involvement. If you really want to pay her tribute, improve your community. Meet your neighbors, take down your fence, share your garden. That way, when she wakes up, we’ll have done the work for her.
