You Know What Makes Me Angry?

Cleveland’s WMMS 100.7 FM radio host Dominic Dieter advises a listener to have his daughter raped if she was a lesbian. Also, Dieter suggests “you should get one of your friends to screw your daughter straight.”

It’s amazing who has jobs in today’s ‘recession’.

I HEART Choice – Seattle, WA

So there’s this event that Aleisha, Shanna and I will be attending THIS WEEKEND in Seattle, Washington. I’m stoked.

So this is a little pre-event share. If you’re not able to go, don’t worry there will be a nitty-gritty post (possibly a vlog….Shanna?) when we get back. Here are the details:

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington’s 11th annual ‘I HEART Choice Student Leadership Summit’ will be held on Saturday, April 28th from 9:00am-5:00pm at the University Of Washington.

This event is FREE and open to all high school and college students. Lunch is provided at no cost.

I HEART Choice is a day long event featuring speakers, panels, and workshops on a variety of issues related to youth and the pro-choice movement. This is an excellent opportunity for you to learn more about our movement and gain practical leadership skills. You will HEART all of the sweet information and mad skills you will take back to your schools and communities.

New Music Monday

Girl, oh girl! A few weeks back this raw three-piece stole a tiny piece of my heart.

Seeker Lover Keeper, a bizarre mix of acoustic folk, has already infiltrated the ears in Australia, and will no doubt do the same on our soil.

These artists create a new meaning for ‘super-group’.  Sally Seltman, Hally Throsby, and Sarah Blasko all hold second careers outside of the band. The lyrics belted are those of love and life experience with feminist undertones and heart.

I have a massive crush on these women! I hope you will too!

Think Global, Act Local

Thanks http://forgetmenotlandscapedesign.com for the photo!!

So Spring is here and the time for gardening is near. With environmental issues hovering in my mind, I’ve begun planning a garden for my back yard. Being a college student pretty much limits my gardening budget, so I’m looking for different cheap ideas.

I borrowed the book, Carrots Love Tomatoes by Louise Riotte from the downtown library and devoured the pages (I swear I’m not a goat) in a weekend. If you’re into improving your garden, definitely read this book! Maybe even buy it because it’s that awesome. In a format suited for any skill level, Riotte highlights which plants go together to improve growth, taste and keep harmful insects at bay. That means less, if any, chemicals to buy, wash off, ingest, and release into the atmosphere. What? Yep, that’s right, save money, water, stay healthy and create a better future just by being conscious of plant locations. Crazy simple.

When I Say I am a Feminist by Shanna Bartholomew

When I say I am a feminist
It means I regret some of the things I said in the past
I know that monetary facades do not last
It means I have to pause and breathe in deep
When I think about the injustices and the societal seeds we reap

I knew I was a feminist
When you gave me a word for the disconnection
My lack of self-reflection

Yes I knew I was a feminist when the pit grew inside me
A yearning to live a little lighter
Draw in a little tighter

My life became double think, doubles takes, and questioning double entendres
My life became too serious, too radical, too liberal
My friends became real, compassionate, and inspiring
My mentors gave and so I give too
To you
And you
And you

The pit that is in my heart, the pit in my throat, the pit in my stomach, this pit that makes me choke.
It’s taught me that no, life isnt fair
We could be geographically nowhere
free of entitlement’s patriarchal glare
Not worrying about the haves and the have nots
Listening with care

New Music Monday

This week I’m switching things up a bit. Instead of an empowered female/feminist artist, you’ll be hearing a lil’ roots.

Playing for Change started out as a small group of documentary film makers that sprouted into an international foundation. The mission of PFC is to give anyone around the globe the opportunity to experience and play music. The foundation also believes that music is a universal language that may be the only way to influence change where it’s needed.

With ideas of peace and global change akin, Playing for Change offers a buffet for the ears presented by all and everyone. Enjoy this interpretation of Bob Marley’s ‘One Love’!

Scary Feminists Club

Molly, the ‘fearless leader’ of Scary Feminists and other student organizations, introduced herself and explained that, “The Scary Feminists is a group of variously gendered folks dedicated to fighting oppression wherever it exists with extreme feistiness and hilarity.”

Even though they are not funded by EWU, there is now a budget (from outside contributions) which expands their options and ability to advocate on campus and within the community. Also, they have recently been combined with VOX, Voices for Planned Parenthood, in order to utilize time, resources and energy.  Since fighting for womyn’s  reproductive rights is a part of both the Scary Feminists’ and VOX’s agendas this is a logical move.  Molly described it as, “double the fun,” when both of these groups meet up every Thursday in Monroe 207 at 1:15 pm.

Spring is a busy time for them while contributing to Pride Week, Corazon Scarf sales, Sexual Assault Month, Planned Parenthood education, the Rape Culture Campaign and many more events.  ”We focus on global womyn’s rights (such as fighting sweat shops), Queer and LGBT rights, Pro-choice issues, womyn of color, fighting rape culture, and  deconstructing white supremacist capitalist patriarchy,” Molly exclaimed.
